Film scores aren’t what they used to be. What happened to the good old days? These sentiments are held by a growing core of film score collectors. By spending time on soundtrack forums like Filmtracks and Film Score Monthly, it doesn’t take long to see that many members of the soundtrack collecting community are wondering why film scores to so many new movies lack the complexity and emotional depth of older scores.
Collecting Soundtracks From Older Movies
With the exception of a new Star Wars or Indiana Jones score by John Williams or the occasional Avatar from a composer with a strong musical voice like James Horner, many of today’s film score collectors find in increasingly difficult to become excited over new soundtracks. Modern movie scores often lack the strong melodic hooks and orchestral layering from the Golden and Silver Ages of film scoring that gave them a unique and memorable character.
People still go around whistling the James Bond theme, but when was the last time you heard someone whistling the theme to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? As a result of bland composing in the current film score landscape, collectors are turning their attention to new releases of older soundtracks.
