R.E.M. are one of the most successful rock groups to have come out of America. This two part article puts together a timeline charting their career to date.

1980 Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry form R.E.M. in Athens, Georgia. Michael Stipe met Peter Buck through their love of the same music; Buck worked in a record store at the time. The two teamed up with Mike Mills and Bill Berry to work on several songs together. Mills and Berry had known each other since high school and played music together since then. The quartet played their first gig at a friend’s party whilst still unnamed.

1981 Radio Free Europe is recorded at Mitch Easter’s Drive-In Studios with an initial pressing of 1000 copies. The New York Times listed it as one of the top ten singles of the year. Chronic Town is recorded with Mitch Easter in October.
