Today’s edition of The Australian newspaper (Feb 7th) reports a letter to the Medical Journal of Australia published today, in which paediatricians tell of at least three babies affected over the past three years, and one baby death. The three paediatric experts from Sydney and one from Christchurch would like to see a ban on naphthalene mothballs.

Some Groups More at Risk

Around five percent of Australians are of Middle Eastern, African, Asian and Mediterranean descent, and it is this group who may have an inherited enzyme deficiency (G6PD deficiency), who are most at risk of damage or death if a baby breathes in fumes from clothing stored in mothballs. The residue of naphthalene remains in the textiles stored in mothballs, and can cause massive breakdown of red blood cells, leading to severe jaundice (kernicterus), possible profound brain damage, and in some cases, death to the baby.

Apparently the risk to other Australians of Anglo-Saxon or indigenous heritage is not so high, but naphthalene can cause red cell breakdown in anyone.
