Not since the United States Grand Prix of 2007 has the U.S. hosted a Formula One race. Now, according to reports on Autosport.com, Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has announced that an F1 race will be hosted in Austin, Texas; the race will debut in 2012 and is slated to run through 2021. It is great news for the sport and for American F1 fans. Formula One has a great history in the United States and here is a look at just some of the venues that have hosted the sport.
Watkins Glen
The famous circuit in New York hosted the United States Grand Prix between the years 1961-1980. Generally, the race was the last on the F1 schedule, meaning that many titles were decided on the track. 1970 saw one of the most interesting finishes in Formula 1 history. Jochen Rindt had led the Championship for most of the season, but was tragically killed during the Italian Grand Prix. Jacky Ickx, a Belgian sportscar ace driving for Ferrari, was in second place in the championship and had the best chance of overhauling Rindt’s point total. In the end, Ickx could not overcome the point tally, and the 1970 U.S. Grand Prix was the first-ever victory for Lotus’ Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi would go on to be a multiple World Champion in the sport.
