Although not terrible, 2009 was decidedly weak musically compared to other years in the decade. It was a year that seemed to coast by primarily on the strength of singles, without much album hype. Even the promise of a Whitney Houston comeback wasn't enough to save the album in 2009. The early lists of 2010 album releases give promise that next year will be a better music year.
Vampire Weekend vs. OK Go in the Battle of the Buzz Bands
Vampire Weekend is scheduled to release Contra, the follow-up album to their 2008 eponymous debut, on January 11th in the United Kingdom and January 12th in the United States. The indie band has a lot riding on this album; critics have hailed them the next great band, but first they've got to prove they can overcome the dreaded "sophomore slump" that often plagues bands with bestselling debut albums.
Up against Vampire Weekend for a January 12 US release date is OK Go with its third studio album. Titled Of the Blue Color of the Sky, the album will feature 13 new songs, including the single "WTF?" According to singer Damian Kulash, the record draws heavily on his adolescent influences like Prince. OK Go has been promoting the album since mid-2009, when the song "Skyscraper" was offered as part of a compilation CD to Banana Republic shoppers.
