Ah, spring is here, the magnolia trees are heavy with blossoms, and the best golfers in the world are headed to Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia for the purpose of participating in the renowned Masters Tournament. It will be a week of extraordinary golf and pristine natural beauty, as the golfers compete to be the one to wear home the coveted green jacket that always goes with winning the tournament, along with an announced top cash prize of $1,350,000 (the actual amount won’t be known until after the third round), a gold medal, their name engraved on the Official Masters Trophy that stays at the course, and 600 Fed Ex Cup points.

Origins of the Tournament and the Course

Robert (Bobby) Jones of Atlanta, after having won what was then considered the Grand Slam of golf, retired from competitive golf in 1930. He then decided to fulfill his life-long dream of building his own golf course. Partnering with an investment banker by the name of Clifford Roberts, they found a piece of land in Augusta, Georgia, that Jones deemed to be “perfect”, and hired famed Scots architect Alister MacKenzie to formulate the plans for the course and do the actual work. Work on the course began in 1931, and the course was officially opened for play in 1933.

The first tournament was won by one of Jones’ cronies, Horton Smith. Jones, under pressure from the membership, later changed the tournament name to The Masters in 1939.
