Elliott Smith released 3 albums and 2 E.P’s with rock band Heatmiser as well as 6 solo records. He was nominated for an Oscar for his song Miss Misery from the Good Will Hunting sound track and his acoustic, finger picking style and very depressive lyrics are often compared to the likes of Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. This is a review of his music career and a look at the ups and down of his life.

Elliott Smith in Rock Band Heatmiser and First Solo Album Roman Candle

In 1992, after graduating from Hampshire Collage in Massachusetts, Smith formed the band Heatmiser along with fellow classmate Neil Gust, bassist Brandt Peterson and drummer Tony Lash. Between 1993-1994 the band released 3 records; Dead Air, Cop and Speeder and an E.P. called Yellow No. 5 which all received strong acclaim and saw the band land a contract with Virgin Records for their next album; Mic City Sons.

In 1994, whilst still working with Heatmiser, Elliott Smith recorded his first solo album; Roman Candle. The record received huge praise and acclaim to Smith’s surprise and the success of this album caused tension with the now singer/songwriter and the other members of Heatmiser. The bands final album; Mic City Sons, was released in 2006 but by this point Smith and the band had split up and Virgin released the album through Caroline Records, an independent arm of Virgin Records.

The music Smith had written for Roman Candle was very different from Heatmiser’s sound. The album was comprised of mainly acoustic guitar tacks and occasional harmonica and electric guitar overlay parts, all recorded by Elliott Smith. The stand out track on this record was Condor Avenue which was technically brilliant, full of meaning and well received by fans and critics alike. The singer now had his own following separate from Heatmiser and more work quickly followed.

Elliott Smith's Self Titled Album and First Signs of Depression

In 1995 record company Kill Rock Stars released the songwriters self titled second solo album. The sound was similar to Roman Candle with the majority of tracks being dominated by finger picked acoustic guitar. The highlights of this album were cult hit Clementine and Needle in the Hay, which in 2001 appeared in Wes Anderson’s critically acclaimed film; The Royal Tenenbaums during a suicide attempt scene with Luke Wilson.

At this point in his life Elliott Smith was drinking heavily and taking anti-depressants and Smith’s self titled album reflected that with dark lyrics about death, substance abuse and God. The album received good reviews and with the basic acoustic sound and solemn lyrics has now become known as the singers darkest record.

The Singer's Third Album; Either/Or Including Classic Track; Between the Bars

With his third album Smith continued the acoustic finger picking style but also created a newer sound with the addition of drums, bass guitar and piano to some of the tracks. The tracks 2.45am and Say Yes were particular highlights of this album along with Between the Bars which would later feature on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack with the addition of a backing orchestra and would become one of his most recognised hits.
